In 1999, Rodríguez made his debut in the CART FedEx Championship Series with Team Penske. Tragically, on September 11, 1999, during a practice session at Laguna Seca Raceway, he suffered a fatal accident at the Corkscrew corner, resulting in a basilar skull fracture.
