Nguyễn Thanh Vân is a Vietnamese director. Born in Hanoi in a family of Thanh Hoá origin, he's the son of film director Nguyễn Hải Ninh. At the age of 10, he followed his father to the set of a movie, and later, while waiting for his college entrance exam results, was sent to southern Vietnam with director Nguyễn Khánh Dư and entrusted as location assistant. He made his directorial debut in 1992 with "Chuyện tình trong ngõ hẹp"
